We started out Wednesday morning by welcoming a group of international leaders to talk about law enforcement and community. The visitors were from Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay, working in law enforcement, youth programs, journalism, tourism, human rights, public safety and community engagement. During their visit to the US they wanted to learn about community policing practices, so Teri Poppino with City of Portland Crime Prevention invited them to Rosewood. We introduced the group to Rosewood community members, our SE Works employment specialist, the Latino Network youth group, members of the faith community, plus Portland Police, the DA’s Office, Parole and Probation and more. What a perfect conversation to have here!!
In the afternoon, we had youth setting up the community studio with a generous donation of equipment from our friend Graham Wright, plus people looking for work, apartments and studying for their GED and college placement tests. We have created a really positive and productive vibe around here!
Community Alliance of Tenants held a Renter’s Rights workshop here in the evening, attended by about 60 people. The workshop was presented in 5 languages (Nepali, Karen, Burmese, Spanish and English!) and was a huge success in helping people understand the responsibilities of tenants and landlords. This is critical information for our most vulnerable populations, especially the ones that are not proficient in English and need to know their rights. Thanks CAT!
