Equity Annoucement

The Rosewood Initiative’s mission is to build a safe, healthy, and vibrant community where neighbors can thrive together. We strive to do this every day in one of the most diverse communities in the state of Oregon. We are excited to announce an increased and expanded effort of our ongoing work to create spaces of belonging that are accessible, inclusive, and center the diverse experiences within our community.

We recognize that this work is challenging and necessary, and that listening and learning are essential in our embodiment of equity. The board and staff are committing more time and resources towards serving the Rosewood Community with awareness and intention.

In March, we had the first Rosewood Community Action Group meeting. This group is being guided by Jossie de la Garza, our Director of Communications and Engagement. The group is made of diverse neighbors that want to influence Rosewood programming, neighborhood investments, and decide how they want to make a lasting impact in their community. We could not be more grateful for the community leaders that are giving their time and talents.

This spring we also formed an Equity Team (pictured above) made up of both board and staff members. Together with the Community Action Group, we are creating a roadmap for investing in equity at The Rosewood Initiative.

To guide our commitment to this work, Matt Ruddy will start as our new Director of Equity and Education later this month. He’ll focus on building our capacity as an organization so that equity is integrated in all that we do. Matt comes to us with nearly two decades of experience as an educator, and has helped lead racial equity work with other organizations, including Portland YouthBuilders, Portland State University and Teaching with Purpose.

We’ve also begun a partnership with Kaycie López Jones who will be facilitating and coaching us through this process.  We are excited to learn from the expertise she brings towards helping organizations grow through self-reflection and outward engagement. We look forward to sharing updates about the work and welcome any questions and feedback. Our hope and our goal is that everyone involved with The Rosewood Initiative can feel that their authentic voice is heard and valued.
